Albany Public Library and Opalka Gallery celebrate the latest Art at APL exhibition, Super-Natural,” with an opening reception on Friday, June 5, at 6 pm at the Pine Hills Branch.

The reception is sponsored by the Friends and Foundation of APL, and features music by The Dave Gleason/Mike Lawrence Duo, cosponsored by the Music Performance Trust Fund. The art opening is free and open to the public.

“Super-Natural” brings together a group of artists who capture and transform our natural world into the mystical—pulsing with light and energy.

  • Berly Brown’s work speaks to a metaphysical world, where paint can “represent multidimensional stimuli.”
  • Working with chenille stems, Ginger Ertz suggests the movement of water and the passage of time.
  • Andrea Hersh escapes the stressors of the everyday world by inventing worlds where “creatures conquer fantastical realms.”
  • Inspired by the Adirondacks, Jenny Hutchinson uses cut paper and layers to “reveal a living ecosystem of transformation.”
  • Splitting her time between Florida and the Adirondacks, Wendy Bodenstab Lynch’s immersive and mysterious paintings reflect the landscapes she inhabits.
  • Mara Lefebvre’s Bijou series is inspired by the beauty and wonder of nature, both sea and forest.
  • Pete Mauney exposes a hidden natural world by employing time and light.
  • Charles Steckler’s drawings are improvisational and intuitive, giving life and form through exploration of mark and space.
  • Ann Wolf has a painting studio in the woods, and uses light to enhance the enchanted portals she sees. All the artists in the show feel a close connection to the fleeting presence of nature, and attempt to capture this as a transcendental experience.

Art at APL is a curated fine arts exhibition program at the Pine Hills Branch showcasing the work of contemporary artists connected to the Capital Region and beyond. The program, which began in 2013, integrates professional artwork into public spaces within the library, enriches the library experience, and gives visitors something interesting and educational to look at while they browse the collections. “Super-Natural” marks the twelfth installment of Art at APL curated by Opalka Gallery. The exhibition program is funded by the Friends and Foundation of Albany Public Library.
