A number of APL positions fall under the NY HELPS (New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement) program. This program streamlines the appointment process, allowing APL to hire qualified permanent employees more quickly and without civil service examinations. Candidates must meet minimum qualifications and other conditions of library employment. APL positions that follow NY HELPS rules are indicated in the job listings and specifications.

You may be required to take the civil service exam for your position when the exam is offered by the City of Albany Civil Service Department. More information can be found on the City of Albany’s Civil Service Employment Portal.

Interested in volunteering at Albany Public Library? Our staff would be happy to have you help us fulfill our mission to educate, entertain and empower our community. Help us in the Albany Made Makerspace, assist staff prepare program materials, or help at library events.
