Employment

As a governmental institution, most of our job opportunities are civil service positions through the City of Albany and the New York State Retirement System. Our union employees are represented by Albany County Local #801 of CSEA, Local 1000 AFSCME, AFL-CIO.

Candidates for library employment are selected from civil service lists maintained by the City of Albany.  Visit the City of Albany’s Civil Service Employment Portal to learn more.

Continuous Recruitment Exams

Exams for Librarian I, Library Assistant, and Library Clerk are all “continuous recruitment,” meaning you can take these exams anytime, at no cost. Once your exam is graded by civil service, you will be given a score and placed on the eligible list. The list determines who we can interview and/or hire.

More information can be found on the City of Albany’s Civil Service Employment Portal.
