New Art Exhibit Opens Dec. 5 at Pine Hills

December 1, 2025 | Art & Music

Albany Public Library and Opalka Gallery celebrate the latest Art at APL exhibition, “Countenance: The Contemporary Portrait,” with an opening reception on Friday, Dec. 5, at 6 pm at the library’s Pine Hills Branch (517 Western Ave.).

The reception is hosted by the Friends and Foundation of APL, and also features a performance by the B Flats, Albany High School’s intermediate jazz improvisation ensemble, and light fare. The art opening is free and open to the public.

Art at APL is a curated fine arts exhibition program at the Pine Hills Branch showcasing the work of contemporary artists connected to the Capital Region and beyond. Opalka Gallery has curated 11 exhibitions, including “Countenance.” The exhibition program is funded by an Arts Center Grant and by the Friends and Foundation of Albany Public Library.

Ten artists reveal a desire for connection in the new exhibition. The exhibition poses the question: “As our gaze is more and more mediated by screens, do we really look at each other face to face anymore?” The show features work by Nuveen Barwari, Judith Braun, Maggie Halloran, John Hampshire, Phil Knoll, Mark McCarty, Philip J. Palmieri, Winosha Steele, Felicia van Bork, and Oliver Wasow.

“Countenance: The Contemporary Portrait” will be on public display at APL’s Pine Hills Branch from Dec. 6, 2025, through May 9, 2026, during library hours.
