Star Wars Day on Free Comic Book Day
As a lifetime lover of comic books myself, I am very excited that our library participates in Free Comic Book Day. Free Comic Book Day is a nation-wide event that originally started just in comic book shops. Now, due to its rising popularity, Free Comic Book Day is celebrated at schools, libraries, and community centers as well. Not only is it fun, but it also helps reluctant readers find something they might want to read. And, as you know, encouraging kids to read is one of our top priorities.
From 1pm-5pm on Saturday, May 2, all seven of our neighborhood branches will be offering free comics to children, teens and adults. The Pine Hills Branch will also be celebrating Star Wars Day (normally May 4) a little early to make Free Comic Book Day a little more special.
Last year was my first year celebrating Star Wars Day at Pine Hills, and I want to make it an annual tradition. Teens have been asking about it all winter: “Are you going to hide the R2D2s in the library, and if we find them, we get a prize? Remember that day? Are you doing that again? With the comic books?” The answer to these questions is yes! However, this time it will not be R2D2 you’ll have to find, but another familiar Star Wars character. Find out who it will be when you pick up your free comics at the Pine Hills Branch on Saturday, May 2.
