The novel Push by Sapphire has always been popular at Albany Public Library, and now the world is talking about Precious, the film adaptation of the novel. Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire just won two Oscars at the Academy Awards, adding to the buzz about the film. Join us for a free presentation of Precious on Sunday, March 21, at 2:00 pm in the large auditorium. The film is free and open to the public.

Stop by Albany Public Library’s online book group Read With Me during the month of February to discuss Lorraine Hansberry’s play A Raisin in the Sun. Lorraine Hansberry was the youngest American playwright and first African American playwright to win the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play of the Year. The play was later adapted to an award-winning film starring Sidney Poitier and Ruby Dee.

In honor of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Albany Public Library is presenting a special two-night showing of the 1978 mini-series, King. The almost 5-hour epic stars the phenomenal, Oscar-Nominated team (for Sounder, 1973) of Paul Winfield and Cicely Tyson, as Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King. Originally broadcast over three nights in February of 1978, “King was nominated for 8 Emmy Awards. Please come to the Albany Public Library Main Library at 6:00 pm in the Large Auditorium on Monday, January 18th and Tuesday, January 19th for what we hope wil be a fantastic two evenings.

Join us for three free snowy suspense films over the holiday break. On Saturday, December 26, Albany Public Library will show A Simple Plan at noon. Following A Simple Plan will be The Thing at 3:00 pm. The series will wrap up on Monday, December 28 with the adventure film Cliffhanger at 6:00 pm. All the films are rated R.

Join us for two nights of Holiday movies at Albany Public Library. On Monday, December 21, Albany Public Library will be showing Nothing Like the Holidays at 6:00 pm. The movie tells the story of a Puerto Rican family reuniting for what may be their last Christmas together. On Tuesday, December 22, The Preacher’s Wife will be the featured holiday movie. The Preacher’s Wife stars Denzel Washington as a handsome angel, sent to earth to help patch up a couple’s marriage. Both movies are free and open to the public.

Local author Vincent Zandri will be reading from his new book Moonlight Falls and then switching gears to play drums with his band the Blisterz.
