APL is hosting a special baby shower on Oct. 20 in an effort to encourage new and expectant parents to share the joy of reading with their children. The Raising a Reader Baby Shower takes place on Saturday, Oct. 20, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the large auditorium of the Main Library at 161 Washington Avenue.
This free event is for expectant parents and families with children ages five and under. The event is designed to encourage parents to read to their little ones and to provide the adults with parenting resources, all within the fun atmosphere of a baby shower. For more information, please call the Main Library Children’s Department at 427-4310.
There are lots of fun activities for the grownups including: a free book and special tote bag, shower games and prizes, free family portraits, parenting information from local organizations, raffles, library card sign-up and replacement library cards, and more. Special programs for children include arts and crafts activities and story times. Prizes, giveaways, and refreshments round out the event.
“Our first Raising a Reader Baby Shower in the spring was a great success with more than 200 parents and children enjoying the activities,” said APL Executive Director Carol Nersinger. “The baby shower is a fun way to encourage expectant and new parents to share the importance of reading with their children. The event also helps us spread the word about all of the free services and programs available to young families at the library and other community organizations.”
