Albany Public Library recently welcomed Melanie Metzger as assistant director for the award-winning system of seven neighborhood libraries that serve the almost 100,000 people of Albany.
“APL is thrilled to have Melanie join our team. Her experience, energy, and enthusiasm for library programs and services are certain to benefit everyone who uses our libraries,” said APL Executive Director Carol Nersinger.
The APL assistant director is charged with supervising public service departments and library security, and assisting with facility management, grant writing, and development activities. This position also helps develop policies and procedures, interpret and negotiate contracts, recommend and implement programs and services, participate in recruitment and selection of staff, and represent the library in the community.
Metzger, who earned a bachelor’s degree in information management and technology and a master’s degree in library and information science from Syracuse University, has spent the last 11 years working at library systems in Texas. She most recently served as assistant library director for children’s services at Lone Star College CyFair, a joint-use public and community college library in Houston. Metzger previously worked in the Harris County Public Library system as assistant branch manager and young adult librarian. Her early career was spent in Central New York where she worked for Syracuse University and the Steele Memorial Library in Elmira.
