The Big Read is a month-long series of programs that brings together an entire community to read and discuss a single book. This November, The Big Read comes to Albany with the book "The Things They Carried" by Tim O'Brien and includes an assortment of book discussions, films, performances, and exhibitions.
"The Things They Carried" is not just a story of the Vietnam War, although it is considered one of the finest books ever written about combat and its consequences. This award-winning book is a brutal, sometimes funny, often profound narrative about the human heart -- how it fares under pressure and what it can endure.
Albany Public Library has multiple copies of the book -- hard copies at the library locations and ebooks for download online -- available to borrow. A limited number of free copies of the book will be distributed at special events in Albany. The Book House in Stuyvesant Plaza is selling the book at a 20 percent discount, if you mention The Big Read.
